What's your least favorite Nightwish album?

As said in the question.

Mine would probably be Century Child, I went off it really badly.

Angels Fall First is the only one I don't really listen to ever. Except for the title song and the remakes with Tony.

Angels Fall First, with Once in second (an unpopular opinion, I know).

The songs just aren't as good to me.

Oh, I don't dislike it. I actually like it a lot, but I just find it a bit...generic compared to other NW albums, but there are still some great songs on the album! I especially love, "Higher Than Hope".

Why should he explain himself? (well, at least not to me. I HATED Once at first, it seemed so ordinary, boring and generic compared to the rest, the only song I liked at first listen was Romanticide - it was heavier then anything I've previously heard by them and I really liked it's pacing. The album had immensely grown on me later, though.)

Somebody's voted Once... that was unexpected. xD

I think since Nightwish have changed their style quite a bit with every album, there are bound to be some that don't fit people's tastes. I wonder who voted for it though?

No idea, I voted for Century Child.

And I don't know, everything they've done with Tarja has been pretty similar to me, the level of darkness has just been varied. And Over the hills and far away/ CC have turned a more progressive, heavier way.

DPP is the album I like least of them. And not because they changed vocalists nor because their change in style. It's just the overall feeling I get from it. In musical and lyrical way. The other albums gave me chills somewhere down the line and DPP lacks that.

To me I kind of see it as...

Angels Fall First - kind of folky and a bit experimental since they were just starting out

Oceanborn - A lot of power/neo-classical metal stuff going on, fairly random vocals and songs with not very typical structures

Wishmaster - A continuation of Oceanborn but a bit more mainstream/structured

Century Child - Their first proper symphonic album, quite dark with a lot of slower songs than previous albums. And there's Marco

Once - More upbeat (but also darker in places e.g. Dead Gardens and Romanticide), combining epic symphonic stuff with elements of their earlier style

Dark Passion Play - The best description of this I've heard is 'epic film score metal' - it is like a film score, mixing songs of different moods and styles. The orchestral stuff is more important now and the songs generally follow a typical structure (though apparently Imaginaerum is more experimental)


I dunno I guess I see them all as quite different but Dark Passion Play is probably the most different, though apart from the change in singer I see it as a logical continuation of Once.

I guess I always just think of this comment I read once where someone said something like "At least we'll always have Angels Fall First (their best album), Oceanborn, Wishmaster and Century Child... I never liked Once" and I was thinking that's the exact opposite of my opinion

For me, it's Oceanborn. It's not even that I don't like it, because I like it quite a lot. It's just the one that has the most songs I'm not too keen on (Nightquest (bonus), Devil & the Deep Dark Ocean, and The Pharaoh Sails to Orion). I like almost every Nightwish song to be honest, but there are some I just don't really listen to.

My least favorite is Dark Passion Play. It's the Nightwish album with the most songs I hardly ever listen to. I love The Poet and the Pendulum though, also really like Sahara and The Islander but the rest aren't just as good as the other Nightwish songs.

I really think Dark Passion Play is tremendously underrated! It's the most wonderful, beautiful album. My favourite thing in the whole world is to go driving in the countryside while blasting DPP it makes me feel so many emotions that Imaginaerum doesn't come close to. I like Imaginaerum but it doesn't really make me feel anything :-/ I think it's because Imaginaerum is totally enclosed in fantasy and doesn't seem to have much real emotion in it, probably because it's based on the film.

^I think the reason I like Imaginaerum best is because of its completely fantasy nature. It's a place I feel like I can go to when I want to escape from a harsher reality. That's just me though, but you're right about DPP being a real album. In fact, it's the most real of all Nightwish albums. I still believe the Poet and the Pendulum is the most honest song I've ever heard. That's why DPP is only second to me. Because while it is a fantastic, emotional album, it makes me face things that I don't always feel comfortable with dealing with.

Exactly That's what I love so much about Nightwish, you can totally withdraw from reality when listening to their music.

I really liked DPP when it came out but after listening to it a lot I got tired of it, which never happened to me with the other Nightwish albums.

It's the opposite for me XD I love it more every time I hear it.

Me too! I didn't enjoy DPP the first time I heard it, except for the song The Poet and the Pendulum. It took me a year or two to fully appreciate it, and now it's one of my favourites!

I don't really listen to Wishmaster as much as the other albums. I don't know why. It's an amazing album - I just don't listen to it often.

I voted Wishmaster. I like it, just not as much.
